Why we exist

Most people choose a career from the outside.

You pick a degree at seventeen based on what a job looks like from the outside. You find out what it is actually like at twenty-two, after the loan.

What the brochure says

A dynamic and rewarding career with excellent progression and a competitive graduate package.

What the room says

Here is what it pays. Here is what Tuesday is like. Here is the bit I would do differently.

How a session works

Two people. Never one.

One person tells you where a career goes. The other remembers what the first year felt like. Both answer the same questions, and the gap between their answers is the most useful part of the hour.

years in, or more

Industry Leader

Where could this career take me.

Fifteen years or more. Tells you what the industry actually is, where it is going, and what the job looks like three promotions from now.

years in

Career Insider

How do I actually get there.

Two to four years in and doing well. Close enough to the start to remember what was confusing, and honest about what they got wrong.

Every session, the same five

The five questions.

Every session answers these, whatever the industry. Numbered because they are asked in this order, not for decoration.

  1. 01What it actually pays, at entry, at three years, and senior.
  2. 02What an ordinary Tuesday looks like.
  3. 03What the interview process is really testing.
  4. 04The route from entry to manager to director, and how long each step takes.
  5. 05What I would do differently if I were starting now.

01

Pick a session

One industry, one date, one hour. Twenty-five pounds.

02

Ask when you book

Write your question at checkout. It is read out on the night without your name, so you never have to be the person who speaks first.

03

Turn up and listen

Camera off if you prefer. Both hosts answer, and where they disagree you get to hear that too.

Minute by minute

How the hour actually runs.

A plan rather than a script, and the balance follows the questions asked on the night. 15 of the 60 minutes are the room asking whatever it wants.

The solid segment is your questions.

  1. 5 min

    Who is in the room

Both hosts, what they do this week, and what they were doing at your age.

    Both hosts

  2. 15 min

    The money, stated plainly

Graduate salary, what it becomes by year three, what the APC costs you in time, and which parts of the sector pay differently.

    Industry Leader

  3. 12 min

The first year, from three years ago

What the job is on an ordinary Tuesday. The parts nobody mentions at a careers fair.

    Career Insider

  4. 10 min

    How people actually get in

Routes that work, routes that waste a year, and what a placement is really worth.

    Both hosts

  5. 15 min

    Your questions

Live, unscripted, both hosts. Ask the thing you would not ask an employer.

    You and the room

  6. 3 min

    What to do next

Three specific next steps, chosen for where you actually are.

    Both hosts

After you book

Four things arrive. In this order.

You are buying an hour from people you have not met, on a site you have not used before. This is everything that happens next.

  1. 1

    Straight away

A confirmation email with your joining link

It arrives within a minute of paying. Your question is read back to you in it, so you can see we have it, and you can reply to change it.

  2. 2

    The day before

    One reminder

Time, link, nothing else. We do not email you about anything you did not ask for.

  3. 3

    On the night

The live hour, camera off if you prefer

You are not on screen unless you choose to speak. Your question is read out without your name attached to it.

  4. 4

    The next morning

    Your recording, yours to keep

Sent to the same address. Watch it again before an interview, or send it to a friend weighing up the same choice. No account to create and no login to remember.

No session has run yet, so this is what a seat gives you rather than a library that exists. The first one is being scheduled now.

Before you decide

Common questions.

If yours is not here, reply to any email we send you. A person reads them.

Do I need to turn my camera on?
No. Your camera and microphone are off unless you turn them on, so you are not in the recording unless you choose to speak.
What if I cannot make the live session?
You still get the recording. It is sent to everyone who bought a seat the next morning, whether or not they were there on the night.
Can I ask something anonymously?
Yes, and that is the default. You write your question when you book, and it is read out on the night without your name attached to it. Nobody has to be the person who speaks first.
What if I need a refund?
Full refund if you ask more than 48 hours before the start time, or if we cancel or reschedule for any reason.
Is this careers advice?
No. It is two people describing their own experience of one industry. It is not regulated careers or financial advice, and it is not an offer of a job, an introduction or a referral to either host's employer.
Who are the hosts?
Named on the listing once they are confirmed, with their real job title, their real employer and how many years they have actually done it. Until then the page says nothing about them, because there is nothing true to say yet.
Why is there no session in my industry yet?
Because we will not list one until both hosts have confirmed a date and agreed to be recorded. Tell us your industry and you will hear when one is booked.
